Sun, sea, and fabulous family attractions; it’s no wonder that Tenerife holidays are still right at the top of favourite hot spots for couples, families, and groups. It’s the largest and most developed of the Canary Islands, but head inland and you’ll still find traditional Canarian life carrying on as it has for centuries. Tenerife is an island of two halves, with Spain’s highest mountain sitting right in between the lush, tropical north and the rocky south. Mix in beautiful beaches, water sports galore, and plenty of family adventures at the parks, and the cliffs of Los Gigantes, and Tenerife holidays tick everyone’s perfect holiday boxes.
Things to do
Families will love Tenerife, as well as groups and couples. With plenty to see and do, you’ll never be bored on this sunshine island. Couples looking for that romantic meal for two can look forward to fresh fish served with a dash of mojo, Tenerife’s own spicy sauce. Spain’s tallest peak, Mount Teide, dominates the centre of the island, giving fantastic views from its lookout points. Take the cable car to the top where on a clear day you can see the entire Canary Islands.
Places to stay
A trio of lively resorts covers the south-west corner of Tenerife with fine sandy beaches and plenty of family-friendly facilities. Choose from Costa Adeje, Playa De Las Americas and Los Cristianos. The island’s pretty capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, lies in the shelter of the Anaga Mountains that sit right in the middle of the island. Charming fishing villages like San Andrés dot the coastline, where you can tuck into some fresh seafood in waterside restaurants. Head north past the white peak of Mount Teide and you come to dreamy La Orotova, a beautifully preserved 17th century town of pretty pastel colours. Just beyond is attractive Puerto de la Cruz, a popular tourist spot.
What should I pack?
There are some essentials you’ll definitely need for your trip to Tenerife, no matter what time of year you’re visiting the Canary Islands. With its long, hot, sunny days, plenty of sun cream is a must, as is a hat and a cover-up for the beach or the poolside. You’ll also want to pack your sunglasses and plenty of cool, light clothes for summer. We recommend going for natural fabrics like cotton and bamboo for maximum comfort.
It’s a good idea to pack comfortable shoes if you’re planning on sightseeing, while a light jacket is ideal for cooler evenings in low season.Don’t forget to pack an EU travel adaptor for charging your mobile phone and other devices on your trip. A Spanish phrasebook can also come in handy, and although most people in Tenerife speak English it is polite to at least try a little Spanish to show willing.
